Business owners often hear 'SEO' and 'Local SEO' used as if they were the same service. They overlap, but they rank different things, in different places, for different kinds of search. Choosing the wrong one wastes months. This guide sets out the differences plainly and helps you decide which your business needs first.

The core difference

Traditional SEO, sometimes called organic or national SEO, is about ranking web pages in the ordinary list of search results for searches with no particular location attached: 'how to choose a laptop', 'best accounting software', 'IELTS preparation tips'. Local SEO is about ranking a business, mainly through its Google Business Profile, for searches where the location matters: 'laptop repair Elephant Road', 'accountant in Motijheel', 'IELTS coaching near me'.

Put simply, traditional SEO competes to be the best page on a subject. Local SEO competes to be the best business in a place.

Where the results appear

For a search like 'dentist in Uttara', the map pack usually appears above the ordinary results, which is why local businesses get most of their calls from Local SEO rather than from their website's organic position.

  • Local SEO: the map pack of three businesses, the full local finder list, and Google Maps itself
  • Traditional SEO: the ordinary blue-link results, and increasingly the sources cited in AI Overviews
  • Both: ordinary results for local searches, where your website competes against other local sites and directories

What each one ranks

Traditional SEO ranks pages. Each page competes on its own merits for the searches it targets, and a strong site can have hundreds of pages ranking for different topics.

Local SEO ranks listings. Your Google Business Profile is one entity, tied to one location, competing for every local search in your category. The website supports it but is not what appears in the map pack.

The ranking signals compared

  • Location: central to Local SEO (distance from the searcher), largely irrelevant to traditional SEO
  • Google Business Profile: the main asset in Local SEO, not a factor in traditional SEO
  • Reviews: a major Local SEO signal, minor for traditional SEO
  • Citations and NAP consistency: important in Local SEO, barely relevant in traditional SEO
  • Content depth: important in both, dominant in traditional SEO
  • Backlinks: important in both, with local relevance counting for more in Local SEO
  • Technical health: important in both; a broken site hurts either

Keywords: with and without a place

Local keywords carry a place, either stated ('in Chattogram', 'Dhanmondi') or implied ('near me', or simply 'pharmacy' typed on a phone, which Google often treats as local). Traditional keywords do not. Volumes differ enormously as a result. A local keyword might be searched a few dozen times a month, but almost every one of those searches is a potential customer nearby. A national keyword may be searched thousands of times by people who will never buy from you.

This is also why keyword research tools often undersell local opportunity. The low numbers they show for area-specific searches hide very high purchase intent.

How success is measured

Mixing these up leads to bad decisions. A local business judged only on website traffic may look like it is failing while the profile quietly produces most of its calls.

  • Local SEO: calls, direction requests, website clicks from the profile, and visibility across a geo-grid of your area
  • Traditional SEO: organic traffic, rankings for target pages, and conversions from that traffic

Timelines and cost

Local SEO tends to show movement sooner, because the competition is limited to an area and profile fixes take effect relatively quickly. Traditional SEO is usually slower, because you compete nationally or globally and content needs time to earn links and trust.

Cost follows scope in both cases. The local side is covered in detail in How Much Does Local SEO Cost in Bangladesh? and How Long Does Local SEO Take to Work in Bangladesh?

Which one does your business need?

  • Clinics, restaurants, salons, repair services, showrooms and coaching centres: Local SEO first
  • Home service businesses that visit customers: Local SEO first, set up as a service-area business
  • E-commerce shops delivering nationwide: traditional SEO first
  • Software, IT and export businesses selling abroad: traditional SEO first
  • Businesses with branches in several cities: Local SEO for each branch, plus traditional SEO for the brand
  • Professional firms such as lawyers and accountants: both, with Local SEO usually paying back sooner

Why most local businesses end up needing both

The two support each other. Google has said that a business's position in ordinary web results contributes to its local prominence, so a stronger website helps the profile. And content written for traditional SEO, answering customers' questions, brings in people earlier in their decision who later search locally.

The right order for most local businesses is Local SEO first, because it produces calls soonest, followed by website content and technical work that strengthen both. The complete Local SEO in Bangladesh guide covers the local side, and the technical SEO service covers the website foundations.

A quick decision checklist

  • Do customers come to you, or you to them, within a particular area? Local SEO.
  • Do you sell to anyone in the country or the world, with no local element? Traditional SEO.
  • Do people search for your service with a place name or 'near me'? Local SEO.
  • Do people research your topic before buying, without a place in mind? Traditional SEO content.
  • Answered yes to both groups? You need both, local first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Local SEO part of SEO?

Yes. Local SEO is a branch of SEO focused on searches with local intent. It shares techniques such as content, links and technical health, and adds its own, such as Google Business Profile optimisation, reviews and citation consistency.

Can my business rank locally and nationally at the same time?

Yes. Your Business Profile competes in local results while your website's pages compete in ordinary results. Strong pages help the profile, and a strong profile brings brand searches that help the site.

Which is cheaper, Local SEO or traditional SEO?

Local SEO is usually cheaper for a single-location business, because the competition is limited to an area. Traditional SEO for competitive national terms generally needs more content and link building over a longer period.

Do I need a website for traditional SEO?

Yes. Traditional SEO ranks web pages, so there is nothing to rank without one. Local SEO can work partly without a website, though a site makes it considerably stronger.

Local SEO and traditional SEO are related disciplines aimed at different targets: one ranks a business in a place, the other ranks pages on a subject. For most businesses serving customers in Bangladesh, Local SEO comes first because it reaches the people ready to buy nearby. Next in the series: Local SEO vs Google Ads.
