How Local SEO Works in Bangladesh

Local SEO in Bangladesh · Part 3 of 8
Knowing that Local SEO matters is one thing; knowing what actually happens between a customer typing a search and your phone ringing is another. This guide walks through the process step by step as it applies to businesses in Bangladesh, including the parts that work differently here: verification, addresses, and searches that switch between Bangla and English.
The short version
Google keeps a database of local businesses built mainly from Google Business Profiles. When someone searches with local intent, Google picks the businesses it considers most relevant to the search, close enough to the searcher, and prominent enough to trust, then orders them. Local SEO is the work of strengthening each of those judgements in your favour.
- Google knows you exist: a verified Business Profile
- Google knows what you are: categories, services, content and reviews
- Google knows where you are: address, pin and service area
- Google trusts you: reviews, mentions, links and consistency
- The customer chooses you: the profile earns the call
Step 1: Google has to know you exist
It starts with a Google Business Profile. Many businesses in Bangladesh already have one they never created: the listing was added from Maps data or by a user, and it sits unclaimed with whatever details someone once entered. Before creating anything, search for your business on Google Maps and claim the existing listing if there is one.
Then comes verification. Google decides which methods to offer, and video verification, where you record the signage, the premises and something proving you manage the business, has become common. Until verification is complete, many edits will not go live and the profile will not perform properly. Unverified or suspended profiles are among the main reasons a business is missing from Maps entirely.
Step 2: Google works out what you are
Relevance is Google matching the search to businesses that offer it. The strongest single signal is your primary category. After that come secondary categories, the services list, your business description, the content of your website, and the words customers use in reviews.
Searches in Bangladesh arrive in English, Bangla and romanised Bangla. Google is good at understanding that 'dentist' and 'ডেন্টিস্ট' mean the same thing, so you do not need every variation written into your profile. Write for customers in the language they use, and let your website carry fuller descriptions of each service.
- Primary category: the most specific one that describes your core business
- Secondary categories: only those that genuinely apply
- Services: every service listed, with plain descriptions
- Website: a dedicated page for each main service
- Reviews: customers describing what you did for them, in their own words
Step 3: Google works out where you are, and where the searcher is
Distance is calculated between the searcher and your business. If someone searches 'pharmacy near me', Google uses their phone's location. If they search 'pharmacy in Uttara', it uses the area they named. Your business location comes from your profile's address and map pin.
This is where Bangladeshi addresses cause trouble. A pin dropped on the wrong building, or an address Google cannot match to a precise point, weakens how accurately you are placed. So do conflicting versions of the address across the web. Check that the pin sits on your actual entrance, and use one address format everywhere.
Distance also explains why rankings vary so much across a city. A business can hold the top position a few roads from its location and not appear at all a couple of kilometres further out. In dense Dhaka neighbourhoods the radius in which you rank well can be small, because many competitors sit close together.
Step 4: Google decides who to trust
Prominence is Google's estimate of how well known and reliable a business is. It draws on the number, recency and quality of your reviews, how often your business is mentioned and linked to elsewhere on the web, and how consistent your details are across those places. Google has also said that a business's position in ordinary web results contributes, which is one reason your website matters.
- Reviews: a steady stream of genuine, recent reviews, with owner replies
- Citations: consistent listings on Facebook, Bing Places and relevant directories
- Mentions and links: local news, associations, suppliers and partners
- Website strength: a site that ranks in normal results for your services
Step 5: The profile has to earn the customer
Ranking puts you in front of the searcher; it does not make them choose you. They compare star ratings, recent reviews, photos, opening hours and how easy it is to call. A profile with dark or outdated photos, no replies to reviews and 'closed' showing at the moment of searching loses customers even when it ranks well.
Google has not published exactly how much customer behaviour influences rankings, so be wary of anyone who claims to know. What is clear is that a profile which earns more calls and direction requests is a better business asset, whatever its effect on ranking.
Why your ranking changes from street to street
Because distance is part of the calculation, there is no single ranking for your business. Checking your position from your office shows you the best case. A geo-grid tool checks the same search from dozens of points across your area and shows where you rank strongly, where you slip and where you vanish.
It is the most honest way to measure local visibility, and it shows where to focus next: the parts of your area where you are close to breaking into the top three are usually the cheapest wins.
What actually moves rankings, in practice
In practice, the changes that most often produce movement are, roughly in order:
- Fixing the primary category when it is wrong or too broad
- Correcting the pin, the address and duplicate listings
- Completing every profile field and service
- Building a consistent flow of reviews
- Adding website service pages that match the profile
- Cleaning up inconsistent citations
- Earning genuine local mentions and links
Where the process breaks down most often in Bangladesh
Ownership is worth stressing: make sure the business owner, not a staff member or agency, is the primary owner of the profile. The complete guide covers the full setup, and How Local SEO Helps Businesses Rank Higher on Google Maps goes further into each ranking signal.
- Verification stalls, and the owner creates a second listing instead of resolving the first
- Staff or agencies create listings under their own Google accounts, and access is lost when they leave
- The business name is padded with keywords, triggering a suspension
- The address is written differently on every platform
- Nobody owns the profile day to day, so reviews go unanswered and hours go stale
Frequently asked questions
How does Google decide which three businesses appear in the map pack?
Google weighs relevance to the search, distance from the searcher or the named area, and prominence, meaning how well known and trusted the business is. The balance changes with each search and each location, which is why the three businesses shown can differ from one street to the next.
Why do I rank well near my shop but not in other parts of the city?
Distance is part of the ranking calculation, so every business ranks best close to its own location. To rank further out you need stronger relevance and prominence than the competitors nearer to those searchers.
Does posting on my Google Business Profile improve ranking?
Posts keep the profile active and give customers current information, which helps them choose you. Google has not said posts are a direct ranking factor, so treat them as a conversion tool rather than a ranking lever.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take in Bangladesh?
It varies from a few days to several weeks, depending on the method Google offers and whether the first attempt is accepted. A clear video showing signage, premises and proof of management gives the best chance of passing first time.
Local SEO works through a chain: Google has to find you, understand you, place you and trust you, and then the customer has to choose you. A weak link anywhere caps your results, which is why fixing the basics in order beats any single clever tactic. Next in the series: Why Local SEO Is Important for Businesses in Bangladesh.
