Local SEO in Bangladesh · Part 2 of 8

Local SEO gets described in so much jargon that many business owners in Bangladesh assume it is either very technical or a kind of advertising. It is neither. This guide explains what Local SEO actually is, what it is made of, what it is not, and which businesses benefit most, with examples from the way people here really search.

Local SEO in one sentence

Local SEO is the work of making your business appear, and look like the right choice, when someone nearby searches Google or Google Maps for what you sell.

That sentence has two halves and both matter. Appearing is about ranking: being one of the businesses Google shows. Looking like the right choice is about what the searcher sees when you do appear: your reviews, photos, hours, and whether calling you is one tap away. Ranking without the second half produces views but not customers.

What a local search result looks like

Search 'dentist near me' or 'AC servicing Mirpur' on your phone and you will usually see three kinds of result. At the top there may be ads, marked as sponsored. Below them sits a map with three businesses listed underneath, known as the local pack or map pack. Below that come the ordinary website results. Tapping 'more places' opens the full list on Google Maps, called the local finder.

Local SEO targets the map pack and the local finder first, because that is where people call, ask for directions and compare reviews. It also targets the ordinary results below, where your website competes.

  • Ads: paid placement, gone the moment the budget stops
  • Map pack: the three businesses under the map, earned through Local SEO
  • Organic results: website listings, earned through website SEO
  • Google Maps app: the same local rankings, searched directly inside Maps

The parts that make up Local SEO

Local SEO is a collection of related jobs rather than one task. For a typical business in Bangladesh they are:

  • Google Business Profile: the listing itself, with categories, services, hours, photos and posts
  • Location accuracy: a correct address, map pin and service area, written the same way everywhere
  • Reviews: a steady flow of genuine customer reviews, with replies
  • Website: pages that confirm your services and location, fast on a phone
  • Citations: consistent listings on Facebook, Bing Places and relevant directories
  • Local prominence: mentions and links from local news, associations and partners
  • Measurement: tracking calls, direction requests and visibility across your area
  • The complete Local SEO in Bangladesh guide goes through each of these in order.

What Local SEO is not

  • It is not social media marketing. A busy Facebook page helps your business, but it does not rank you on Google Maps.
  • It is not advertising. You do not pay Google per click, and results do not stop when a budget runs out.
  • It is not a one-time listing. Profiles, reviews and competitors change constantly.
  • It is not a trick. Fake reviews, keyword-stuffed business names and fake addresses get profiles suspended.
  • It is not the same as ranking a website nationally. The competition is limited to your area.
  • The difference from general website SEO is explained fully in Local SEO vs Traditional SEO.

Which businesses in Bangladesh need it most

Any business that serves customers in a particular place benefits. It matters most where people search with urgency, or compare options nearby before choosing:

  • Clinics, diagnostic centres, dentists and pharmacies
  • Restaurants, cafes, bakeries and sweet shops
  • Salons, parlours, gyms and spas
  • Coaching centres, language schools and training institutes
  • Repair and home services: AC, electrical, plumbing, pest control, mobile and laptop repair
  • Showrooms: furniture, electronics, motorcycles, tiles and sanitary ware
  • Hotels, resorts and community centres
  • Law firms, accountants, travel agencies and real estate offices

Local SEO for businesses without a shopfront

Many Bangladeshi businesses serve customers at home: technicians, cleaners, tutors, caterers, event decorators. Google supports this. You set the profile up as a service-area business, hide your address from the public, and list the areas you cover.

You still compete on relevance and prominence, and your real base still influences where you rank strongest, so be realistic about how far from it you can compete. A technician based in Mohammadpur will find it easier to rank there than in Uttara, however the service area is set.

An example of how it plays out

Take a hypothetical dental clinic in Dhanmondi. Someone two roads away searches 'dentist near me' at nine in the evening. Google looks for dental businesses that are relevant (the right category, services and reviews mentioning treatment), close to that phone's location, and prominent (well reviewed and widely referenced). It also considers whether the clinic is open right now.

If the clinic's profile lists 'Medical clinic' instead of 'Dentist', shows no evening hours, and has its map pin on the wrong street, it may not appear at all, even though it is the nearest dentist. Fix those three things and it becomes a real candidate. That, in miniature, is Local SEO.

How to tell whether your Local SEO is working

Your Google Business Profile has a performance report that shows how many people found your profile, what they searched, and what they did next. The numbers that matter most are the actions: calls, direction requests and website clicks. Compare them month on month.

Rankings are useful as a leading indicator, but checking one keyword from your own shop tells you very little, because results change with the searcher's location. A geo-grid scan checks your position across a grid of points covering your service area and gives a far more honest picture.

Where to start this week

  • Search for your business on Google Maps and check that the name, pin, hours and phone number are right
  • Look for duplicate listings of your business and note them
  • Compare your primary category with the top three competitors in your area
  • Add ten real photos of your premises, team or work
  • Send your review link to five recent customers
  • If your business does not appear at all, why your business is not showing on Google Maps covers the usual causes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Local SEO and Google Maps SEO?

They are mostly the same thing. Google Maps SEO usually refers to ranking in the map pack and on Maps, which is the core of Local SEO. Local SEO also includes the website work that helps you rank in ordinary local results.

Is Local SEO only for big cities like Dhaka?

No. It often works faster in smaller cities and towns, where fewer businesses have optimised profiles. The same principles apply in Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet or a district town.

Do I need a website for Local SEO?

You can appear on Google Maps without one, but a website strengthens your profile considerably. It confirms your services and location to Google and gives customers somewhere to check you before they call.

Can I do Local SEO myself?

The basics, yes: completing your profile, fixing your details and asking for reviews. The harder parts are diagnosing why you are not ranking, cleaning up duplicates and citations, and sustaining the work every month.

Local SEO is the discipline of being findable and choosable in your own area. For a business in Bangladesh it starts with an accurate, complete Google Business Profile and grows through reviews, a supporting website and consistency across the web.
